Full Description:

The PhD enrolment will be at MINES ParisTech (also known as École des Mines de Paris, created in 1783 by order of Louis XVI) which is a graduate school (Grande École) in Science, Engineering and Economics. It is a founding member of “Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL) – Research University”, which brings together a number of the most prestigious graduate schools and universities in Paris. A strategy of intense industrial collaboration is at the heart of the MINES ParisTech model, making it the number one French graduate school by the volume of contractual research. The Centre des Matériaux, located in Evry (35 km south of Paris), is one of the largest laboratories of MINES (employing 180 people) and belongs to the Mechanical and Materials Engineering department of the graduate school.

Subject of the thesis:

This position is part of FiBreMoD (Fibre break models for designing novel composite microstructures and applications), an Innovative Training Network with 6 academic and 6 industrial partners in Belgium, UK, France, Germany, Israel and Netherlands. FiBreMoD’s goal is to train 13 researchers to become multi-talented and interdisciplinary experts in understanding, characterising and predicting failure of fibre-reinforced composites. Such researchers will be highly coveted by industries using lightweight materials (e.g. aeronautics, automotive, energy), which currently overdesign components due to a lack of reliable design methods for composites.

Applications are invited for a 3-year research position in the field of advanced experimental methods for characterising fibre-reinforced composite materials with a focus on a multiscale modelling approach of a UD composite with relevant microstructural data. This research position will lead to the award of a doctoral degree delivered by MINES ParisTech, PSL – Research University. The post is supported by an allowance provided by the European Union. Candidates must fulfil the eligibility criteria for this award: i.e. (i) not residing in France for at least 24 months in the last 3 years, and (ii) having less than 4 years of research experience.

The successful candidate will be based in France but spend work periods in England (University of Southampton), Belgium (Toyota) and Germany (BAM).

The key challenge of this PhD project is to supply a multiscale modelling approach of a UD composite with relevant microstructural data in order to simulate the long term behaviour of carbon fibre composites to better represent real material applications such as pressure vessels. It is desirable that the candidate should be able to demonstrate excellent analytical and numerical skills with a background in Solid Mechanics, Mathematics or Materials Science, which will be applied and further developed in both modelling and experimental studies. The position includes 2-months secondments at the University of Southampton (to gain experience in computed tomography measurements for composites), Toyota Motor Europe (Belgium) to exchange ideas on incorporating the effect of defects and gain a better perspective on industrial modelling requirements. Six months will be spent in Germany (BAM, Berlin) to gain insights in the requirements for modelling pressure vessels.

Candidates profile:

The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who meets the academic requirements for enrolment for the doctoral degree at MINES ParisTech. You will have (or be about to obtain) an MSc (or equivalent) degree in engineering or material science, preferably, with a focus on composite materials. Eligible applications will be assessed on the applicant’s (i) academic qualifications, (ii) background on materials modelling, (iii) technical skills, (iv) communication skills, and (v) motivation for the project.- Very good spoken English and writing skills are required (MINES ParisTech requires a minimum score of 785 points on the TOEIC or equivalent international test);- A very good knowledge of both spoken and written French or basic knowledge in combination with high interest in learning French is expected;- A good knowledge of both spoken and written German would be helpful;Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
