The Chomarat Group, the host institution, is an international textile group with a staff of 1,200 and a presence on 4 continents. It is a private company, owned by the Chomarat family. It has been run for over a century by 4 succeeding generations, each rising to the challenge of continual development in a ever changing world. The Chomarat Group has remained loyal to the region where it all began, with its operational headquarters, as well as its 3 main production sites, based in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. These three units specialize in different technologies and are designed for the production of textile and plastic coatings, textile finishing, special reinforcement materials for the building industry and composites. They cover the whole range of the Group ́s know-how.
The PhD enrolment will be at MINES ParisTech (also known as École des Mines de Paris, created in 1783 by order of Louis XVI) which is a graduate school (Grande École) in Science, Engineering and Economics. It is a founding member of “Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL) – Research University”, which brings together a number of the most prestigious graduate schools and universities in Paris. A strategy of intense industrial collaboration is at the heart of the MINES ParisTech model, making it the number one French graduate school by the volume of contractual research. The Centre des Matériaux, located in Evry (35 km south of Paris), is one of the largest laboratories of MINES (employing 180 people) and belongs to the Mechanical and Materials Engineering department of the graduate school.
Subject of the thesis:
This position is part of FiBreMoD (Fibre break models for designing novel composite microstructures and applications), an Innovative Training Network with 6 academic and 6 industrial partners in Belgium, UK, France, Germany, Israel and Netherlands. FiBreMoD’s goal is to train 13 researchers to become multi-talented and interdisciplinary experts in understanding, characterising and predicting failure of fibre-reinforced composites. Such researchers will be highly coveted by industries using lightweight materials (e.g. aeronautics, automotive, energy), which currently overdesign components due to a lack of reliable design methods for composites.
Applications are invited for a 3-year research position in the field of advanced experimental methods for characterising fibre-reinforced composite materials with a focus on the characterisation of single fibres and in situ matrix properties. This research position will lead to the award of a doctoral degree delivered by MINES ParisTech, PSL – Research University. The post is supported by an allowance provided by the European Union. Candidates must fulfil the eligibility criteria for this award: i.e. (i) not residing in France for at least 24 months in the last 3 years, and (ii) having less than 4 years of research experience.
The successful candidate will be based in France in the Auverge-Rhône-Alpes region (Chomarat manufacturing plant) but spend at least six months in Paris working with the researchers of MINES ParisTech as well as work periods in Belgium and England.
The key challenge of this PhD project is to develop and optimise new advanced textile reinforcements based on hybrid plies and/or chopped fibre mats and quantify benefits compared to standard composites. The work requires skills and knowledge in composite manufacturing, modelling and testing with a background in textile materials. The position includes 2-months secondments at KU Leuven and at Imperial College London (to experimentally test composites). Six months will be spent in the Centre des Matériaux (MINES ParisTech) to carry out a literature review and perform multiaxial mechanical characterisation.
Candidates profile:
The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who meets the academic requirements for enrolment for the doctoral degree at MINES ParisTech. You will have (or be about to obtain) an MSc (or equivalent) degree in Mechanical Engineering, Textile Engineering or Material Science. Eligible applications will be assessed on the applicant’s (i) academic qualifications, (ii) background on materials modelling, (iii) technical skills, (iv) communication skills, and (v)
motivation for the project. Very good spoken English and writing skills are required (MINES ParisTech requires a minimum score of 785 points on the TOEIC or equivalent international test); Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
