allows the production of nanofibres with a diameter that typically varies from

The PhD thesis
objective is to produce carbon nanofibers from precursors of natural origin,
especially from lignin. Nanofibres
from lignin solutions and polymers will be here produced and characterized. On
the basis of preliminary positive results, polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) will be
preferentially used at the start of the project. The nanofibers will be made
with equipment already available at CRPP. The project will include research on
the influence of additives such as carbon nanotubes or graphene. These
additives are expected to improve mechanical properties of the nanofibers and
to facilitate their electrospinning.
An important part of the project will focus on the structural and mechanical characterizations of the synthesized nanofibers. The structural characterization will be mainly carried out by electronic and optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Mechanical characterization of nanofibers is particularly challenging. We propose to use a new method developed at CRPP. This method involves probing the resistance of nanofibers in fluid flows under elongational shear. This new method will allow for the first time the determination of the breaking strength of carbon nanofibers. The work will be conducted in the frame of the FORCE project funded by the IRT Jules Verne, and involve collaborations with the ICMN-Orléans and the technological plaform CANOE.
