Presentation of the establishment and the laboratory of reception:
The CEMEF is a European leader in the field of research
on material processing (metals and polymers).
Approximately 160 people - including 70 PhD students are performing research
designed to get in depth understanding of forming processes. The main expertise
is on thermal, mechanical and physical modeling, numerical simulation,
processing, physics and chemical physics. In the field of polymers, the main
research areas are:
· Polymers physics: Crystallisation (quiescent, under flow), flow of suspension, polymer
rheology, dispersion of porous aggregates.
· Simulation: Modelling of the main polymer forming processes, software development.
Injection molding (Rem3D®), extrusion (Ludovic®), blow molding (TForm®), sheet
forming, etc.
· Surface science: Surface reactivity, adhesive bonding, friction, lubrication, wear.
Context and thesis work objectives:
Due to the economic importance of the process, modelling of hot
rolling has produced a considerable number of studies of the roll bite
area. Now that this zone is well known, many observations show that the
interstand is the locus of several coupled phenomena, with important
consequences on product quality: recrystallization and induced
plasticity, elastic stress reshuffling and elastic buckling (flatness
defects), interstand creep. These mechanisms interact in a complex way
with stand settings (profile and flatness actuators). The objective
of the PhD is to provide LAM3/TEC3, a FEM software for the steady state
modelling of rolling, several modules and functionalities to allow
studying all these mechanisms for complex stands of hot rolling mills.
