Title: Development of smart surfaces with thermosensitive properties, assisted by plasma polymerization

Research topic: Stimuli-responsive materials are able to react to a stimulus provided by their surrounding environment and consequently to tailor their properties. Since many phenomena locally occur at the surface of the material, the design of smart surfaces with switchable properties is therefore of major interest to broaden the industrial applications of stimuli-responsive materials.The main objectives of this PhD thesis are the elaboration of smart surfaces, based on polymer coatings, with thermoreversible properties and the understanding of the corresponding interfacial properties. The fabrication of these surfaces will be assisted by plasma polymerization, a green process that enables the design of functional thin polymer films. The incorporation of nanoparticles into the polymer film will be considered.This project will benefit from stimulating interdisciplinary research in the field of smart surfaces. It will consist of:i) a fundamental study to elucidate the relation between the coating composition and the interfacial properties,ii) as well as an applied study in order to proof this concept for future industrial applications, for instance for biomedical applications.

The candidate: Applicants should have a Master or Engineer degree (or equivalent) in a relevant chemistry or materials science discipline. Interest and enthusiasm for surface physico-chemistry are essential while theoretical and experimental skills in surface functionalization and characterization will be an advantage. The applicant should show initiative and seriousness. They should have good organization and communication skills.

About the laboratory: The PhD student will be located at the IS2M, a research laboratory belonging to both the CNRS and the University of Upper-Alsace, associated to the University of Strasbourg. It is a multidisciplinary laboratory conducting research of excellence in materials science in the fields of chemistry and physic of surfaces and interfaces as well as in porous materials. IS2M's scientific activity covers a wide domain of not only fundamental but also applied research. The IS2M holds an impressive park of up-to-date equipments, including numerous equipments for surface analysis that will be used for this project.
