The SIAME research unit (University of Pau et des Pays de l'Adour UPPA)), Anglet Campus (SW of France), is offering a scholarship for a 3 years PhD position starting in September 2015. International students are also eligible for this scholarship.

About the scholarship
The Mechanic department at the SIAME research unit conducts part of its research in coastal engineering with focus on coastal risks and wave interactions with structures
(http://siame.univ-pau.fr/live/interaction-vagues-structures). A PhD fellowship is available in this group to perform research on the topic "A new numerical model to simulate waves generated by rockslides”.

This PhD is part of a European project on tsunami hazard.

Study

The PhD study will be based on the numerical model THETIS which solves the Navier-Stokes equations for multiphase flows. The objectives is to better understand and predict the waves which may be generated by several solid blocks in interaction. A new and original method based
on the fictitious domain approach will be developed to simulate the slide composed of several rocks. An important part of the work will consists in modeling the shocks between the rocks. Then the model build will be compared to existing experiments and used to better understand the physics involved. Besides the core of the thesis previously described, the student may also be involved more superficially in other team works related to landslide tsunami.
