CNRS
REACTIVE TRANSFERS IN HETEROGENEOUS MEDIA
CNRS, Futuroscope

Physics (Other)
Full Description:

Reactive transfers are investigated in natural or man-made porous media whose morphological, compositional, reactive or transport properties are spatially heterogeneous. They may vary continuously or when constitutive elements of different kinds exist, and on various scales: existence of inter- and intragranular porosities; media with spatially varying properties (regions more or less porous, permeable, reactive…); fractured media, or media containing highly conductive channels whereas the reactants sit in regions less accessible to transfers. The chemical aspects may also include situations of various complexity, ranging from single reaction/single species such as contaminant sorption/desoprtion in underground media or pyrolysis of materials exposed to fire, to more complex schemes involving multiple species and reactions, often associated with heat sources or sinks.

In all cases, the couplings between chemical mechanisms and transport processes are a crucial issue. Their description is a complex problem where many questions remain open. We plan to address it on the basis of earlier works regarding various situations of this kind and of the numerical tools developed on these occasions. The approach consists in direct numerical simulation and theoretical analysis, with the formulation of effective models (upscaling, equivalent behavior of objects, …) and the determination of their conditions of applicability (regimes, local equilibrium, …) as final objectives.

The issues addressed in this project are relatively fundamental but they are directly involved in practical situations in natural, household or industrial contexts with high environmental, societal and economic stakes, such as environment preservation, underground resources management, fire safety or the optimization of many industrial processes.
