Anisotropic mesh adaptation for moving geometries in CFD
MINES ParisTech, Valbonne - Sophia Antipolis
Mathematics (applied) Mechanical Engineering Materials Science
Full Description:

Presentation of the establishment and the laboratory of reception:

The CEMEF is a European leader in the field of research
on material processing (metals and polymers).
Approximately 160 people - including 70 PhD students are performing research
designed to get in depth understanding of forming processes. The main expertise
is on thermal, mechanical and physical modeling, numerical simulation,
processing, physics and chemical physics. In the field of polymers, the main
research areas are:

· Polymers physics: Crystallisation (quiescent, under flow), flow of suspension, polymer
rheology, dispersion of porous aggregates.

·Simulation: Modelling of the main polymer forming processes, software
Injection molding (Rem3D®), extrusion (Ludovic®), blow molding (TForm®), sheet
forming, etc.

· Surface science: Surface reactivity, adhesive bonding, friction, lubrication, wear.

Thesis work description:

Numerical simulation is nowadays very well established in industrial
design, and even challenging applications involving the coupling between
fluids and deformable solids (the so-called Fluid-Structure Interaction
or FSI) can be tackled. Numerical solvers and high-performance
computing (HPC) facilities can deal with the huge
numerical meshes required to accurately simulate complex industrial
cases. However, current methods are still limited in cases where the
structure undergoes large displacements. This hurdle is particularly
significant for applications in which imposed “rigid body”
rotation/translation movements are combined with conjugate heat
transfer, or when the deformation of the structure is due to aerodynamic
forces (e.g. the rotation of wind turbine blades).
