Full Description:

Statistical modelling of extreme wave and water level data from the gulf of Biscay to assess the impact of winter storms on the Basque Coast.

The University of Pau is offering a three year PhD scholarship starting September 2015 for a research project combining multivariate statistics and environmental sciences. The aim of the project is to develop a statistical approach to jointly model wave and water level data collected at various locations off the Basque Coast. It is hoped, among other things, that the study will help to better assess the risk incurred by winter storms on the coast, such as their impact on coastal structures and buildings. The ideal candidate will have a masters or engineering degree ("ingénieur grande école")
with a very good knowledge of probability and statistics, and good computing skills. Knowledge of the R statistical system would be greatly appreciated. The PhD student will be based part-time in Anglet and part-time in Pau. He will be co-supervised by a professor of statistics and a professor of coastal engineering.

Keywords : coastal engineering, environmental sciences, multivariate statistics, copulas, change-point detection, extreme-value theory

Documents for applying : Letter of motivation, CV and transcripts of records for the last 2 years.
