CNRS
Design and microfabrication of micro-energy generators
CNRS, Besançon
Institut FEMTO-ST
Engineering Mechanical Engineering
Full Description:

Keywords : Micromachines, Clean room technologies

Energy micro-generators are devices of an increasing demand for applications in mobile electronics, environmental sensors, or embedded systems. The goal of the proposed PhD is the design and the development of a high-efficiency energy micro-generator based on a thermodynamic Stirling cycle, which is among the most efficient in termes of energy conversion. This work could result in a portable micrmachine that could be used to generate energy from any natural heat source (solar rays or log fire for instance) in environments that do not provide any electrical power supply. The challenge is to produce a prototype of very small dimensions, using clean room technology and materials that are chosen to optimize the performances of the machine while retaining very small dimensions. The PhD student will have in charge the system design and will also have to develop clean-room micro-fabrication techniques required to build the machine. Our institute (www.femto-st.fr) has a state-of-the-art clean room that will make the fabrication possible with MEMS technologies. Therefore, this PhD grant  will also be an opportunity to become familiar with micro and nanofabrication technologies in clean room. Some preliminary work has already been done by the insititute on this subject (by a postdoctoral researcher and by a PhD student) and the expected student will have to integrate all the building blocks to fabricate a complete machine and test its performances. If it is successful, this prototype will be proposed to various industry partners (automotive, aerospace, microelectronics, telecommunications). Such a machine could also be useful in isolated environments far from cities or power generation plants.
