Nano Particles : Optical measurement of nanoparticles with a large size distribution in suspensions
Université et INSA de Rouen,, Rouen

Nanotechnology Metrology Applied Physics
Full Description:

The increasing number of human activities using
nanoparticles induces a strong demand for their characterization, either for
production quality reasons, performance, or health and environment problems.

While the characterization of the nanoparticles deposited on a substrate by
direct measurement techniques (atomic force microscopy or electron microscopy)
is well controlled, the in situ measurement of suspensions is more problematic.
For this type of environment, a very popular technique in industry and academic
laboratories is the DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering). This technique is
inexpensive and very effective on dilute solutions of monodisperse nanoparticles.
Nevertheless, measurement errors occur in the case of concentrated populations
of nanoparticles, agglomerated and poly-dispersed suspensions. Then the limits
of this technique need to be identified and new models must be developed.

In the frame of a collaboration with the team Nanometrology from LNE, a thesis
on the DLS technique is proposed. This thesis includes:

A theoretical/numerical part aims a rigorous simulation DLS signal. The
calculated signals will:
• quantify the effect of the number of particles on the DLS response

• identify the limitations of the technique

• estimate the uncertainties associated to measurements

An experimental part aims to provide an apparatus based on
the new concepts numerically validated.

The performance of the DLS and FII for the liquid suspension characterization
of nanoparticles with a broad size distribution will be compared.
