During the irradiation of materials by ultrashort laser pulses, periodic nanostructuring of surfaces
appears called LIPSS (" Laser-induced periodic structures Surface "),or "ripples". Ultrashort laser energy which is deposited and distributed inhomogeneously in the material will initiate local thermal
stresses and/or transient phase changes which can cause micro - structural changes. High resolution backscattered electrons diffraction analysis (HR-EBSD) has demonstrated the high potential of the analysis of these periodic nanostructures.
The main objectives of this project (3 years) will be to investigate ultrashort laser – materials interaction mechanisms to establish a correlation between the creation and resorption of microstructural defects in materials and the periodic self-organization effects observed after ultrashort irradiation. The structural disorder will be quantified by transmission electron microscopy.
The PhD student will be involved in transient plasmonic excitation resulting from ultrashort laser
–materials interaction at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL, US), through temporally and spatially resolved pump-probe experiments.
