Job description
The growth of mineral crystals (during cement setting, rock formation, bone growth …) almost always occurs in nano-confined conditions, mineral grains growing in close contact. The aim of this PhD project is to study experimentally how nano-confinement modifies the atomic mechanisms of growth and dissolution. We will focus on the dynamics of atomic steps, and their possible interaction with other defects or molecules, investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and vertical scanning interferometry (VSI).
The candidate will have an excellent education in condensed matter/liquid physics, and a proven ability to experimental physics. The PhD student will work in UCBL in Lyon, France. The work willl be carried out in close collaboration with theoreticians in Lyon, and will also have strong interactions with other groups of the network.
The position will be financed by the European Training Network NanoHeal that started in January 2015.
